If you’re not using a salt system, learning How Much Chlorine and PH To Maintain Proper Pool Water level is crucial. It’s what keeps your pool free of microorganisms and infectious contaminants as well as keeping swimmers happy and comfortable. Not quite sure how these elements work? We’ve got the answers to all the most common questions about swimming pool chlorination and pH levels, learn how much Chlorine and pH For Good Pool Water!

Before we start:

  • Buy only what you think you’ll use for the season- pool chemicals generally lose potency over time.
  • Store your pool chemicals in a dry, cool, dark place. Sunlight can affect the chemical composition of some liquids.
  • Avoid chemical vapor inhalation. This can be dangerous, especially in people with existing respiratory issues.
  • Always make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

pH Levels

pH is the measurement of a solution’s acidity. The scale goes from 0, being the most acidic, to 14, the most basic, with 7 being neutral. The optimal level for pool water is around 7.4, as it keeps your pool clean without irritating your eyes and skin. If your pH level is too high (above 8) you risk skin irritation, lime buildup, cloudy water, and poor disinfection. With a level too low (below 7) you’ll have aggressively acidic water that can damage your pool liner, cause eye and nasal irritation and even damage components of your pool.

How to Raise/Lower pH

To lower pH: The most common way people lower their pH is by using muriatic acid, also known as hydrochloric acid.

To raise pH: Typically, soda ash (sodium carbonate) is used, though baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can also be used. It should be noted, however, that baking soda will also raise alkalinity (level of dissolved materials that keep pH stable).

In both cases, make sure that you add small amounts before retesting your water to ensure thorough circulation. A local pool chemical supply store should be able to help you determine how much chemical you need based on your individual water test.

How Chlorine Affects pH Level

How Much Chlorine and PH To Maintain Proper Pool Water

Chlorination

Chlorine is the chemical most often used to kill bacteria and microorganisms that are harmful to humans. The way it works is the chlorine solution breaks down into several components, including hypochlorous acid (HOCI) and hypochlorite ions (OCI-). These components destroy cell walls of the potentially hazardous organisms, rendering them harmless. As time goes on, these chemicals will eventually be broken down and more chlorine will have to be added. The goal for total chlorine level is around 0.5 to 1.5 ppm.

Another reaction in the pool is the conversion of chlorine into combined chlorine (or chloramines.) This chemical is a large factor in irritation while swimming, and it’s inefficient at cleaning. To reduce the presence of combined chlorine, the pool should be shocked with calcium hypochlorite. This will temporarily spike chlorine content levels but this will dissipate quickly.

Another thing to note is that when organic chlorine is used regularly, your pool will experience an increase in cyanuric acid. Cyanuric acid is a chemical that inhibits the effectiveness of chlorine, so you should try to keep levels down. This can be done by adding regular, untreated water to the pool. You should aim to keep your cyanuric acid levels below 20 ppm (parts per million.)

Customers always ask us, How Much Salt Do I Need For My Swimming Pool? This article will help you learn how much salt to add to your salt water pool.

Target Salinity

Salt water chlorinators like our Hayward Salt and Swim Chlorination System or our Exell salt systems offer unparalleled comfort and convenience, all while saving you money. But how much salt should you add to your pool to keep your system running efficiently? Ideally, you should aim for your above ground or inground pool to have approximately 3,200 ppm (parts per million). Simply bring a sample of your pool water to a local professional and they can tell you the quality of your water, allowing you to adjust accordingly.

Salt Quality

You should keep in mind that the salt you use in your pool is important. Always use salt meant for a chlorination system as it’s typically a higher purity of sodium chloride, as well as being the right texture for dissolving evenly and quickly. Never use products like rock salt, it’s not as pure and can leave undissolved solids at the bottom of your pool. We carry AquaSalt to take the guesswork out of maintenance.

How to Add Salt to Your Swimming Pool

Step 1 – Test

The first step is to assess your pool water’s status. This can be easily accomplished by taking your pool water to a local professional. Again, you should be looking for somewhere around 3,200 parts per million. This should be done even with newly unsalted water, as it’s entirely common to find that your water may not register 0 salinity.

Step 2 – Distribute

Pool salt is very pure, so you can do this with your hands if desired. When putting the salt into your pool, broadcast in wide sweeping motions to ensure the greatest surface area, which means the quickest dissolve time. Dumping all of your salt in one place means it’ll pile up, resulting in less surface contact with the water. Remember that it’s easier to add more, if incorrect, than to reduce your salt levels.

Step 3 – Brush

After putting the salt into the water, occasionally brush the pool floor to encourage circulation and quicker dissolving. This is especially important for above ground pools, as it’s rare for them to have a bottom return. Without a bottom return, it takes longer for the salt to naturally circulate.

Step 4 – Wait

We recommend running your filter for 24-48 hours, ensuring that all salt has thoroughly dissolved throughout the system. After waiting, it’s typically a good idea to test your water again for accuracy. If more salt is needed, simply repeat these steps until you’ve reached the correct salinity.

Save Energy and Dollars with a Variable Pool Pump

We are continuously asked, How Much Money Can A Variable Speed Swimming Pool Pump Save you over time? And if you’ve been considering buying a variable-speed pool pump, you’ve probably heard it could save you money on energy costs. But in case you aren’t sure that the potential savings are worth the cost, below is some information that might help.

The Pump Affinity Law is a term used to express the relationship between motor speed, flow rates, and energy consumption. While some energy savings come directly from improved motor efficiency, the majority of energy savings gained by replacing a single-speed pump with a variable speed pump is due to the Pump Affinity Law. This law quantifies that power consumption drops at a nonlinear rate as you reduce pump speed and water flow. When you cut the motor speed in half, the flow rate is also reduced to half, but the power consumption of the pool pump is reduced to 1/8th of the original draw. The following chart demonstrates how the pump speed and flow rates directly impact power usage. Remember, most single-speed pumps have a standard 3,450 rpm speed that cannot be adjusted, even when a flow rate is much less than 66 gpm is required, as depicted in the example in the table below from the Department of Energy.

How Much Money Can A Variable Speed Swimming Pool Pump Save

Variable Speed Pump Energy and Cost Savings Comparison

The following example illustrates how replacing a single-speed pump with a variable speed pump can create significant energy savings.

The average residential swimming pool contains 25,000 gallons of water and has a suggested turnover rate of 24 hours. A single-speed pump drawing 2,000 watts, operating at 3,450 rpms and generating a flow rate of 66 gallons per minute can turn over the entire 25,000 gallons of water in roughly 6.3 hours.

(25,000 gallons / 66 gpm) / 60 minutes = 6.3 hours

At this rate, the single-speed pump would consume 12,600-watt hours or 12.6 kWh per day, to turn over the pool.

6.3 hours x 2,000 watts = 12,600 watt hours (12.6kWh)

However, because of the Pump Affinity Law, slower flow rates create greater energy savings. In the field, a variable speed pump set at a flow rate of 22 gpm will draw 116 watts and turn the pool over in 19 hours but only consume 2.2 kWh of electricity.

(25,000 gallons / 22 gpm) / 60 minutes = 19 hours

19 hours x 116 watts – 2,200-watt hours (2.2 kWh)

This is a savings of 10.4 kWh per day or approximately 3,796 kWh per year. The average retail price of electricity to residential customers in California, where there are an estimated 1.1 million in-ground pools, is 15.3 cents per kilowatt-hour. Following this example, the homeowner could realize a savings of $582 annually on their electric bill.

The average retail price of electricity to residential customers in Florida is 100.4 cents per kilowatt-hour. Following this example, the homeowner in FL would realize a savings of $432 annually on their electric bill.

The post How To Backwash A Pool Sand Filter In 10 Simple Steps appeared first on Best Above Ground Pools.

]]>
Learn How To Backwash A Pool Sand Filter In 10 Simple Steps with this easy to follow guide! Follow the simple steps below and you can keep your pool filter maintained in no time!

When sand filter pumps are set to filter, water will flow from the pool, through the filter and then back into the pool. The sand that’s in the filter system will block dirt, oil, and debris. What results is a dirty and clogged filter that can reduce the ability of the sand to filter the water and get it back into your pool.

How To Backwash A Pool Sand Filter In 10 Simple Steps

Backwashing will help your pool sand filter not get clogged. Pool water normally flows top to bottom in a sand filter, water enters at the top of the tank and pushes down through the sand bed into the laterals at the bottom of the tank. During backwashing, the water flows in reverse, from bottom to top, out of the laterals and up thru the sand, to flush out the trapped dirt from the sand bed and send it out the waste line.

Learning how to backwash a pool sand filter isn’t that hard and should be done once the pressure displayed on your pressure gauge is 8-10 PSI over the starting level. It’s also good to backwash after big storms, when the water gets cloudy, or when you’ve cleaned up an algae bloom.

How To Back Wash A Pool Sand Filter

How To Backwash A Pool Sand Filter In 10 Simple Steps

  1. Turn off the power to the pool pump at the circuit breaker before moving the multiport filter valve handle on the pump. This will prevent damage to the plumbing, gasket & internal filter parts. It also ensures your safety.
  2. Unroll the backwash hose & make sure it is tightly clamped & laid out where you want the wastewater to go.
  3. Press down fully on valve handle & rotate from the FILTER position to the BACKWASH position & lock it in place.
  4. Turn the power to the filter pump back on & run it for at least 3 minutes. The water in the sight glass on the side of the valve should change from cloudy to clear & the water coming out of the backwash will probably look dirty.
  5. Turn the power off again to stop the backwashing process.
  6. Depress the multiport filter valve handle, move it from the BACKWASH position to the RINSE position & lock it there.
  7. Turn the power back on to start the rinse process and allow the pump to rinse the filter for 1 to 2 minutes.
  8. Turn the power off to stop the rinse process.
  9. Depress the multiport filter valve handle, move it from the RINSE position to the FILTER position & lock it there.
  10. Turn the power to the pump back on for normal filter operation and Check your pressure gauge to ensure that the pressure has dropped 8-10 PSI from where it was prior to the backwashing process.

That’s it! You’ve successfully learned how to backwash your sand filter!

1. INSTALLING YOUR ABOVE GROUND POOL

The pool must be installed only on level, well-drained, firm (undug, non-filled) earth. We do not recommend backfilling or grading earth up against the pool wall or frame covering any part of them.

  • Check local building codes for setback from house and property lines.
  • Check regulations concerning fence height and position.
  • Check above and below ground for existing gas, electric, telephone and water lines.

ERECTING A POOL ON BLACKTOP, TAR PAPER, ASPHALT, CONCRETE, GRAVEL, OR ANY SOIL CONTAINING SHARP OBJECTS WILL INVALIDATE LINER WARRANTY.

  • Sod should be removed to prevent irregular bottom and any unpleasant odor from decaying grass.
  • Do not use any oil based weed killer on cleared ground as it could stain the liner. Use weed killer made specifically for swimming pool base applications.
  • Material for bottom of pool should be fine and free of sharp objects.

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS:

  • Fine (shell-free) sand or vermiculite.

FOR HARD BOTTOM:

  • 6 parts of either material can be mixed with 1 part cement; applied dampened 2” (5 cm) thick, smoothed and packed with a trowel - Cove 4” (10cm) up wall around pool.

If NUTGRASS is prevalent in your area (ie. Southern USA) use special chemicals which kill nutgrass in pool areas. Consult your local hardware or lawn care company.

NOTE: pH and chlorine balance must be maintained at normal levels. Excessive pH change or chlorine load will result in liner fading, turning brittle and either fading or puckering - This is not covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.

Winterize your pool by reducing the amount of water in the pool to 1/2, adjust pH and chlorine to proper levels and cover. NOTE: Water must be left in the pool at ALL times. Removal of the water from the pool will result in liner shrinkage which is NOT covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

2. STEPS TO INSTALLING YOUR ABOVE GROUND POOL

(following numbers on installation sheet)

6 Tools required.

7-14 Layout, ground preparation and ground leveling (in areas prone to nutgrass (Southern U.S.) sterilize soil with approved chemical).

15-16 Check and layout parts.

17-20 Mark out and level area for posts (on patio blocks) and tracks. 21-23 Assemble connectors and tracks approximately 1/2” (1 cm) gap.

24-29 Add floor sand and uncoil wall into track starting midway on a connector (#25-#27)- securing with pegs and string (or have 5 - 6 people hold wall). Once unwound, adjust tracks at connectors to make wall bolt holes line up. Secure wall with hardware using every hole (screw head on water side of wall). Do not use impact gun for wall screws. Minimum tightening torque of 60-inch pounds to maximum 85-inch pounds. Tape over screw heads using duct tape.

30-31 Layout posts and install on bottom connector while securing top of post to wall with tape. 32-35 Spread, smooth and compact sand on floor with 6” (15 cm) cove against wall.

36-42 Spread out liner in the sun, refold and place in pool overlapping the liner wall over the steel wall and securing with inner combing.

43 Remove wrinkles and make final liner adjustments, install top tracks and top connectors (at each post). Overlap liner may be folded up under the ledge - do not cut.

44-47 Install top ledges and top caps.

48-51 Assemble skimmer/inlet, hoses and filter according to separate manufacturer’s instructions.

NOTES:

  • POOL MUST BE BUILT ON SOLID, LEVEL AND NON-FILLED AREA.
  • ENSURE WALL JOINT IS BEHIND A POST WITH THE SKIMMER AND INLET POSITIONED WHERE YOU WANT THE FILTER (#26).
  • ENSURE ALL WALL BOLTS ARE TIGHTENED SECURELY TO A MINIMUM TORQUE SPECIFICATION OF 5 FOOT POUNDS.
  • DO NOT ASSEMBLE WALL ON A WINDY DAY.

* THIS INSTALLATION IS FOR AN OVERLAP LINER. FOR OTHER LINER TYPES, CHECK LINER BOX FOR INSTRUCTIONS.

INSTALLING AN ABOVE GROUND POOL

Planning to purchase & install an above ground swimming pool? Make installation day a breeze by planning out a few steps in advance. This planning & preparation should be done before you buy an above ground pool.

Choosing an Above Ground Pool

Find the Best Location for Your New Pool

The area you devote to your new above ground pool should be well thought out to avoid future problems & optimize the environmental benefits around it. You must understand the layout of your utilities in order to avoid any future complications. Also, you need to avoid locating your pool under any electric lines. After determining these boundaries, you can plan out the spot that optimizes your chance of 1) getting as much sun as possible, 2) avoiding as much wind as possible & 3) keeping leaves from falling in the pool as much as possible. Lastly, the view & distance from the house to the pool is important, so keep that in mind.

Choosing an Above Ground Pool

Receiving Your Pool Kit

Once you buy an above ground pool kit, you just need to sit back & wait for it to show up at your house. Above ground pools tend to arrive secured to a pallet, so it is your job to inspect it for any damage before signing the bill of lading. With such a costly investment, it is a good idea to check that everything is included & nothing has been damaged in transit. Only sign if you are satisfied after evaluating everything included.

Choosing an Above Ground Pool

Pool Extras

While shopping for above ground pools, you will notice a selection of products to support & embellish your above ground pool. The most important part of the pool is the vinyl liner because without it water will spill out of the cracks. Liners come in all sorts of patterns & can provide 10 to 15 years of quality use.

To protect the vinyl liner, you should probably consider using a pool cove, wall foam, & floor pad (some pool kits come with these, others don’t). Pool cove snaps into your pool’s wall track & keeps the liner from overstretching at the seam of the pool. Wall foam protects the liner & makes the pool more comfortable. Floor pads protect the liner from any objects that may come up through the ground & helps prevent footprints or heel divots in the floor of the pool.

Other accessories that are valuable after building your aboveground pool include steps & ladders, pool lights & fountains. Solar blankets keep your pool water warm through cooler nights & a winter cover is the best way to keep your pool winterized to prevent complications caused by cold weather conditions while the pool is not in use.

Above Ground Pools

Get Your Pool Permit First

Contact the local officials responsible for building codes to be sure you do everything legally. Ask about above ground pool fencing requirements as well.

Above Ground Pools

Ensure Your Pool has a Flat Bottom

The ground you build on needs to be as flat & level as possible. Mark the circumference of the pool by pounding a stake at the center of the chosen area, then string out to the radius of the pool plus one foot. For an oval pool, you will need to locate two center points the proper distance apart. Mark the radius of each center point & then connect them with tangent lines. Once the perimeter is marked to remove the turf & locate the low point. Level out the area down to the low point using picks & shovels & check the level with a 2x4 & level.

Get Prepared for Your Pool Installation

You will some tools to complete the project once the pool arrives:

  • Screwdriver
  • Box cutter
  • Tamper
  • Wrench
  • Drill
  • Extension cord
  • Duct tape
  • 6x12" patio blocks (one for each upright)
  • Sand to cover 1-2”
  • A friend for a helping hand

Above Ground Pool Installation

Place all the pieces out in an orderly manner. Make sure you have everything you need, including the installation manual that comes with the pool. You’ve already marked off the perimeter & the area has been leveled to your satisfaction, so now you want to distribute the bottom wall rails in a wide circle &place the bottom plates at each intersection. Then, connect the two all the way around.

Place the patio blocks under each plate, then install them by sinking them flush with the ground. The pool integrity relies on the wall rails resting completely on the ground. So, you need to make sure everything remains level & flat as throughout the installation. Use a laser level to check that all pavers are at the same height. Next, bring in a yard of masonry sand for the floor. Disconnect one piece of the bottom frame to get in & spread the sand evenly, tamping it firmly in place.

The pool walls come next. Use landscape stakes to keep the wall from folding, bending or otherwise causing trouble before you bolt it together. First, decide where you want your skimmer located & place that section. With a second person helping, place the base of the wall into the track, continuing all the way around until you finish back at the beginning. Strengthen this form by installing the uprights to each bottom plate & tightening the bolts.

Now you install the liner. Spread the liner out & attach to the top rails & plates to secure the liner in place. Start adding the water. Wait until you have an inch or two of water in the pool, then smooth out any wrinkles. Once the water is about 3’ deep, the skimmer & returns can be installed. The last thing is to hook up the filter & pump.
